What is a VPN and how does it work?

Understand VPN encryption, public IP addresses and the limits of online privacy in plain language.

An encrypted tunnel between two points

A virtual private network creates a tunnel from a compatible client on your device to a remote VPN endpoint. Traffic routed through that tunnel is encrypted on that part of its journey. The VPN server then forwards the connection towards the destination.

What changes when you connect

Many websites see the VPN server’s public IP rather than your normal network address. Your internet provider can still observe that you are connected and how much data is transferred, but the tunnel changes what it can directly inspect. Use HTTPS as well: it protects the browser-to-website connection beyond the VPN endpoint.

What a VPN cannot do

A VPN does not prevent every kind of tracking. Cookies, account logins, browser fingerprinting and information you enter can still identify you. It also does not make suspicious downloads safe or guarantee access to a streaming catalogue. Combine it with updates, unique passwords and careful browsing.

Make your next connection a private one.

Choose a plan and follow the setup guide for your device.
